Semantic Map provides the right amount and detail of map-information according to the user's distance from the display

<img src="http://payload42.cargocollective.com/1/0/10864/3155860/SemanticMap_07_640.jpg" width="640" height="425" width_o="2048" height_o="1360" src_o="http://payload42.cargocollective.com/1/0/10864/3155860/SemanticMap_07_o.jpg" data-mid="16136255" border="0" align="left"/>

Public spaces are frequently loaded with information that helps people to find their way around. However, people are often in a hurry to get where they are going and need to spend the minimum time and effort possible finding out how to get there. The problems with conventional public displays such as signs and maps are that they are static, sparsely distributed, and overloaded with information that is often irrelevant to any given person.

Developed by Eric Chang, Pedro Nakazato Andrade and Sergio Paolantonio at Microsoft Research Asia, Semantic Map is a technology that provides the right amount and detail of map-related information according to the user's distance from the display. As people glance at such displays from afar, they see the most significant information in large, bold type. As they approach the display for more information, we dynamically decrease type sizes and increase the detail level of both map layouts and their information overlays. These overlays are dynamic, updating in real-time according to the schedule of events and notices, as well as potentially personalized, connecting to the person's calendar of meetings and appointments. Overall, the goal of Semantic Map is to help people find their way around both physical and information spaces, by exploiting natural information-seeking behaviors and body movements.

Our starting point was how to enhance people's experiences of public space in large, multistory office buildings. In such environments, printed map navigation can be problematic as it requires time for the user to approach the map, locate and orient themself, and filter out irrelevant information to find what they are looking for. For very busy people, we need to find ways of making this process faster, clearer, and more reliable. Our consideration of technologies to support such interactions led us to solutions based on the Microsoft Kinect, with its built-in capabilities of body, face, gesture, and voice recognition. We realized that by using natural body movements to interact with map-related information, we could have the user intuitively glide through different levels of information in a way that is both user-centered and goal-oriented, as well "walk up and use" while remaining hygienically touch-free.
In busy office environments where time is money, saving a few minutes each day can add up to serious savings over the course of a year. However, the benefits of Semantic Map extend beyond saving time. The personalized display facilitates serendipitous encounters with highly relevant but previously unknown information about current upcoming events, while its public nature encourages social encounters with other people. By creating entry points into conversations about daily goals and commitments, Semantic Map fosters a sense of mutual awareness among co-workers.

Our starting point was the Microsoft Kinect technology of body, face, voice, and gesture recognition. To help us focus on the interaction design and the desired user experience over time, we first created a range of video prototypes that explored the concepts we could potentially integrate in our final design.

After mapping the physical area the Kinect camera could reach, we explored how information could be divided and displayed in such a space. We developed a series of paper prototypes with different volumes of information to not only test the relevance of what is on the screen, but also evaluate the reading quality from different distances. Based on user experiences with these prototypes, we divided the space into five levels of semantic detail based on step-length. As the user moves towards the display, the visualized map information gradually increases in detail.

With the logistics of interaction and navigation established, we built a working prototype that allowed us to test transitions between screens as well as the accuracy of gestures to make the interaction feel natural for the user. To summarize, we have employed best practices in user-centered design to explore mental models of embodied interaction with multi-layer maps.

What is the role of the designer today?Taking a people-centric approach, this film expresses the views of CIID Partners Simona Maschi and Vinay Venkatraman, juxtaposed with informed insights from Peder Burgaard and Iago Noguer Storgaard. · · ·Designers have an enormous responsibility to shoulder and this goes way beyond the use of materials and aesthetic pleasure. Stepping back from the final 'product', we also need to think about the big picture. The growing desire for individuals to customise and democratise products, systems and services plays a part in how the role of the designer slots in to a larger ecosystem. Designers have the power to change the way people live their everyday lives. Business strategy, technology, communication and societal demands are just some of the aspects today's designers need to take in to consideration. The designer of today is the designer of tomorrow. · · ·

‘Bones’ is an orthopedic cast with sensors for capturing muscle activity. It is supported by a community-based website for cast users and those who track their mobility and recovery achievements.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/10864/614856/pedro_Bones_640.jpg" width="640" height="480" width_o="1417" height_o="1063" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/10864/614856/pedro_Bones_o.jpg" data-mid="2840915" border="0" align="left"/>

After a fracture, the patient goes to the Hospital to be analysed and receives the proper treatment by their doctor. There they are presented with Bones. Each time the user turns on Bones, all the muscle activity around the fracture area is captured by electromyographic (EMG) sensors and stored in the cast device.

This information can be synced via wireless to the user’s online profile where they have a history of their activities as a simulation of their full mobility recovery time according to their progression and exercising routine. On the website, Bones analyses the user’s achievements and suggests specific exercises in order to keep the muscles active around the fracture area. Ultimately, using the Bones cast will reduce the overall period of recovery time.

The clip below shows one day in the life of a "Bones" user.Bones from Pedro Andrade on Vimeo.
All the information collected from the user goes to the community based website of Bones where it is available online to all. Doctors, physiotherapists and new users of Bones can consult and follow the patient's progress.

On the website new users can visualize the achievements of current and former patients with the same type of fracture. The reason for sharing this information works as a way to encourage new users to engage with their recovery process from the beginning of their treatment.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/10864/614856/4 Service blueprint 38_640.jpg" width="640" height="360" width_o="1280" height_o="720" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/10864/614856/4 Service blueprint 38_o.jpg" data-mid="2907070" border="0" align="left"/>

Focus area

The process of recovering from a fractured bone is not limited only to the period spent with the cast, but to the entire mobility and muscle strains recovery process. During the cast period the fractured limb loses huge amounts of muscle strain due to the inactivity of the area. One of the causes is that users start to exercise the limb only after removing the cast while they should be engaged in keeping the muscles around the fractured area active from the very first day with the cast.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/10864/614856/bonesFocus1_640.jpg" width="640" height="400" width_o="1280" height_o="800" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/10864/614856/bonesFocus1_o.jpg" data-mid="3606268" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/10864/614856/bonesFocus2_640.jpg" width="640" height="400" width_o="1280" height_o="800" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/10864/614856/bonesFocus2_o.jpg" data-mid="3606269" border="0" align="left"/>

The goal of Bones is to offer concrete information and a sense of achievement according to the level of exercise that users do during the cast period. Based on all the physical activity data of the patient, Bones simulates the time reduced from the users full mobility and muscle strain recovery treatment.
